3D Printers and VEX

We are an international school in Japan that is just beginning our VEX Robotics program. We currently use V5 and plan to expand into IQ and AIM in the future.

How essential is a 3D printer for a robotics lab at this stage? I am considering the Bambu Lab P1S Combo 3D Printer, but I am unsure whether it is a necessary investment this early in our development.

For context, I have not used a 3D printer before, but I am interested in learning and eventually teaching students how to use one.

Welcome to the PD+ community!

I think 3D printing is a great way to explore prototyping and CAD, but isn’t necessary early on. There’s so much you can get into with just the hardware and coding software itself.

I have a P1S Combo at home (and we have one in the office), and while I love them because they are so easy to learn, it can be a bit of an investment compared to using those funds for additional metal or sensors.
