Digital or Handwritten Notebooks?

With the summer coming to a close, a lot of teams are going to be starting back up with the school year. And with a new season, it means it’s time for a new notebook!

Personally I am a fan of the digital notebook. It allows multiple members of the team to work on it at once (with the Google Drive version) and you dont have to worry about losing the notebook or someone forgetting it at home. It does take some time to get used to, but the templates really help with getting it all set up.

What format is your team using for notebooks this season? Why? I’d love to hear how your team chooses their notebook format and how they plan on keeping up with it this year.

Great hot topic especially with the competition season coming into full swing. This is an especially good option for the schools who have a paper-free policy.

I heard about some competition only receive the paper notebook. Is it true?

Hi! So there are some events that will accept only paper notebook submissions, however teams using a Digital Notebook would only need to print out their notebook in order to have it accepted. And vice versa, events that require digital notebook submissions will mean that students using physical notebooks will need to scan the pages and upload them into a single document for judging. The rubric for notebooks however do not show any preference for one format or the other.

I found all of this information here in this article:

“The choice of judging format for the event rests with the Event Partner. Detailed information about judging should be found on the event page on RobotEvents. All teams at the event must submit their notebooks in the same format, regardless of their notebook’s native format. A team with a physical engineering notebook will need to upload a link to a digital copy via RobotEvents, or conversely, a team with a digital engineering notebook may be asked to print it out prior to the event.”

If you want to know what type of submission the event is looking for, you can find it here under Judging Format when you open the event in Robot Events:
