I have a teacher complaining about the fact that screws are always falling off the build when students are coding/driving. I am told that even the teacher will tighten them and they still fall off. This is a continuous problem…any suggestions I can pass on?
VEX EXP does not use any lock nuts or thread-locked parts like are used on V5. This is to make the robots easier to assemble and disassemble in the classroom environment. It is possible that vibration of using the robot would them cause them to come loose, especially in the case of a screw and nut retaining two metal parts where no plastic standoff retainer is used. The softer plastic in the standoff retainer will help to reduce the vibration and stop them shaking loose.
Do you know if the screws that are coming loose are using a standoff retainer?
The teacher is using the directions for the build that VEX provides. He says the nuts and bolts are coming loose with and without the retainers.
Part of this may also just be from use over time! EXP builds are meant to be edited and taken apart fairly regularly (between STEM Labs is what I would recommend). So because of that, it may be something that is happening over time if the same Base Bot or Clawbot is being kept together for months at a time. Happy to chat and see if we can figure out a solution over a 1 on 1 meeting if that would help
