Gear Ratio in VEX Code IQ

I have a teacher looking for information on how changing gear ratio in the devices of VEX Code IQ affects the robot. Can anyone direct me to where he can find that information?

@Jenna_Juechter Do we have an article on this or any info in the api site?

Hello!

When the gear ratio is changed in the configuration, VEXcode uses that information to determine how many turns of the motor are needed to reach the intended distance (like when using “Drive forward for 200mm”).

We have a few different resources about gear ratio themselves:

To learn more about how the turn of a motor and wheel connects to the distance travelled, we also have the Wheel Turns activity – IQ Activity - Wheel Turns - Google Docs.

While we don’t yet have a dedicated article about understanding gear ratios, this is great feedback. We’ll make a plan for filling in this knowledge gap for the future.

There is a cool website I use to help students understand gears. It was created by the Philadelphia school district. Check it out! Gear Generator
