It’s super rainy here in Pittsburgh, PA today. This coming school year, I am going to be teaching K-2 students. So I have been thinking, could I create game boards that are large enough to use the 123 bot as the main game piece and students can code it to move the corresponding spaces etc. Does anyone else have fun ideas to incorporate VEX into the rainy/snowy recess days??

@Danielle_McCoy How about Robot Tag or Robot Freeze Tag? I used to love those simple recess games when we were growing up! With VEX 123 the kids could decorate the art rings to use for the game. Make it a theme…winter, sports teams, or characters from a story you have read, etc. They could use the same rules as traditional tag or freeze tag.
On snowy days…a twist on “Clean the Room” use cotton balls as snow balls! You could also set up a neighborhood on the field tiles with pictures of houses and ask students to be a kind neighbor and code the robot to “shovel” the sidewalks from house to house.

How about a collaborative robot obstacle course? The students could make the obstacles, and then code their 123 Robot to move through the course!
As I’m typing this, I’m remembering how my second graders used to LOVE creating stores and restaurants during indoor recess - I always had lots of recycled materials around for them to be creative with. You could challenge them to make a mini robot restaurant and code the robot to serve the food, which they could make, (yarn makes excellent spaghetti ) along with a little art ring serving tray. In that case, you’d need to use the Coder or VEXcode 123 to code it, since the buttons would be blocked, of course. It’s unconventional, but I bet the kids would have a blast with it!

Thank you for these ideas!

I love the idea of using the current conditions and relating it to the learnings.
Animal Homes: Discuss how different animals behave during rainy or snowy days and create different animal homes across the board and each robot could represent / be decorated to that animal and program the robot to find its animal shelter in these conditions.
This would also be perfect for the animal habitat activity! Discussing how habitats may need to temporarily change due to weather!

You can always find creative uses or connections for GO builds with indoor recess too!
For instance, build the Adaptation Claw and play different kinds of relay races using the claw.
Or, experiment with how you could build an inclined plane that could be used to play a bowling game in the classroom.
If you’ve built any of the GO Creatures, challenge students to a relay race in which they have to move like one of the creatures - crawling like Crawler, or flopping like Flopper!

I found these rugs that could go with the Ocean & Mars Exploration activities! Great to also just take out & roll back up for easy recess coding fun!
