Good evening, I am looking for ideas to create a lesson plan, activity and code for the following standard.
“Write algebraic expressions from verbal descriptions.”
Example: Express the description “five less than twice a number” as 2y - 5.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Danielle,
I think once students have had some basic practice with translating straightforward verbal descriptions into algebraic expressions, you could provide them with some robot-themed story problems to use, such as:
George scored 35 points in his IQ classroom competition by placing 7 Cubes in the scoring zone. If each cube is worth x points, use algebra to rewrite the following sentence:
There are 7 cubes worth x points in the scoring zone for a total of 35 points. (7x = 35)
That being said, the robot theme is just a fun add on - it doesn’t really enhance the teaching of this concept, and there’s not a way to create code for it that I can think of that wouldn’t be overly complicated.
