Three Billy Goats Gruff is a classic tale retold by the amazing, Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen! In this lesson, students analyzed common elements of a folk tale. After the story, teams created paper bridges and used the VEX 123 and additional weights to test the strength of their bridge. Some paper bridges were strong enough for the VEX 123 to drive across!

This month, we have focused on biographies in the library to mirror the work happening in the 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms. On Thursday, our school is hosting a space-themed Innovation Night to showcase student projects across K-8. To tie this all together, we chose two books about influential women in the space industry, Mae Jemison and Margaret Hamilton. Please check out our lessons, complete with VEX 123 activities, below!

Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed zooms in on the childhood of Mae Jeminson, highlighting her dream to go to space, the people who told her it was not possible, and those who encouraged her to reach for the stars.
This lesson focused on the character traits exhibited by the young astronaut during her early years. After the biography lesson, students were asked to code the VEX 123 robot to navigate from the Endeavor shuttle to the ISS, creating a path that “collected” all of the experiences that positively influenced Mae’s journey to space.

LESSON SLIDE DECK
Margaret and the Moon by Dean Robbins follows how the inquisitive life of Margaret Hamilton led her to become the programmer of several successful Apollo missions.
After the biography lesson, students programmed a VEX 123 to reach the lunar landing spot of Apollo 11. For an added challenge, students were asked to code the robot to visit as many tile squares as possible without visiting the same square twice before reaching the landing spot.
