New Robotics Coach Growing Coding Skills

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting with a new robotics coach, and we got to talk all about preparing students for coding and improving with their autonomous projects.

As the 2025-26 season comes to a close, there are still lots of ways to encourage students to learn more about coding and up their computer science knowledge before the game is even announced for 2026-27. In that vein, we talked about VEXcode VR and the CS Level 1 - Blocks course. As free resources, it’s something that excited students could work on over the summer and come back in the fall prepared and ready to code using sensor feedback.

This would lead in nicely to the Virtual Skills options! Also hosted in VEXcode VR, this would allow registered teams to start practicing coding the hero bot for that season.

Beyond these coding resources for students, we also discussed some of the educator resources to help support them through the beginning of the next season from the Introduction to V5 Masterclass (specifically the chapters on the Bumper Switch and the Competition Template) and the Engineering 101 for V5 Masterclass.

Would love to hear if anyone has other resources that has worked well for them getting new V5 competition kiddos started with coding
