I am getting ready to register my first team for this year’s competition season. Anyone have any advice for me?

The first thing I would say is make sure you get the team registered soon. The deadline for registrations for this season is December 15th.
The next step would be to take a look at the REC Foundation Library at kb.roboticseducation.org
This article is definitely a really good place to begin.
I am sure there will be plenty of questions as you start your journey so keep asking here in the PD+ community.
