Peacock Party

2nd grade students read aloud “Feathers for Peacocks” that goes along perfectly with the Peacock Party VEX 123 activity. The students illustrated the robots with feathers that they got from our school’s VEX lab in their journals in preparation for the activity.

That’s awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! The crossover of literacy and STEM can be so much fun - and this is a perfect example

Another story connection could be the Coder Monster Activity alongside the book, I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll.

One of my favorite versions of this story, is one where Rita Moreno reads it aloud. I used to play this for my Kindergarten class (just the audio) during quiet time. The students came up with their own mental images of the monsters in the story, from just listening to it. Then when we read the book ‘live’ (after several listenings) and saw the illustrations - they were shocked at how different they were from what they saw in their minds!

I think this would be a really neat exploration with this activity - have students create a monster from the story with their Art Ring based on what they think the monsters look like from listening to the story. Then code them to do their ‘monster dance’ (or “Monster Mash” if it’s spooky season). Finally, watch the story (or read the book aloud) and compare and contrast the students’ monster creations to the book’s illustrations!
