Speedbot from Robo Rally lab not matching with Speedbot from Team Freeze Tag lab, causing some issues

Hello again everyone. I’m having a bit of an issue.

I’m following along in the 42 week tab curriculum, and we are now on Team Freeze Tag. I noticed in Lesson 3, when you are looking to attach the bumper switch, the robot does not look quite like it did from the Robo Rally build for the Speedbot. As such, the placement of the bumper switch requires the addition of two frames along the bottom of the robot. This is not really possible based on how the Speedbot was built in Robo Rally.

I was under the assumption that students were meant to keep their robot in tact from one lab to the next, and then just build onto it based on the new part(s) of the next lab. Do I actually need to have my students disassemble and then reassemble their robots according to the build at the beginning of each lab? Or can I just make adjustments on the fly, and perhaps just add a bumper switch wherever it makes sense based on my build?

Please do let me know, as I need to continue on with this lab, and I don’t want to slow the class down because of this.

Hi John, great catch, and thanks for asking before you rebuilt anything.

No, you don’t need to have students take their robots apart. Team Freeze Tag only needs a Bumper Switch on the back of the robot. Keep the Speedbot from Robo Rally and mount the switch wherever it fits on the back. Our guide for teaching these units with V5 kits actually recommends the Speedbot for Team Freeze Tag.

What you ran into is on us. The V5 version of Team Freeze Tag is built around a different robot, the TrainingBot, so the Lesson 3 instructions won’t match what your students have. We’ll get that fixed. Again, thanks for sharing.

Let us know how your students do with Freeze Tag!
