Switches and Pulleys and Dragons, Oh My!

Have you seen the newest VEX GO Activity - Swift Switch: Motorized Drawbridge?. In this activity, students construct a simple motorized drawbridge using a Motor and Switch with a pulley!

I could see this being a great follow up to the Astronaut Rescue Activity, where your pulley becomes mechanized. You could even then apply what you learned with the Swift Switch to blend the build with the Astronaut Rescue builds

The drawbridge brings castles to mind for me (and storytelling). I think this could be used in conjunction with the storyline from the 123 Dragon in the Village Activity Series. The same story to frame it, but with more building oriented activities with VEX GO.

This is the story to Dragon in the Village (in case you’re unfamiliar)

Instead of the 123 Activities that involve driving from the village to the castle, from the castle to the village to gather supplies, and then creating a dragon pushing robot with the Art Ring, VEX GO Activities could be spun to fit this theme:

This could be a really neat mixed age experience, or just a creative way to connect storytelling with VEX GO. @Tina_Dietrich and @Laura_Mackay , @Jessica_Drayer, and @Anna_Blake this seems up your alley!

I love how you’re connecting different VEX GO activities and incorporating storytelling elements into the learning experience. It’s a great way to engage students and make the concepts more memorable.

I love this idea, and it got me thinking about even more castle-related extensions you could build with VEX GO, to provide even more storytelling opportunities!

  • If you can build a drawbridge, what about a portcullis? Not sure what a portcullis actually is? I wasn’t, so I looked it up and it is one of these spiky iron gates that raise and lower:

  • What about trying to build a catapult or trebuchet with VEX GO pieces? They would be for pumpkin chucking contests, of course! :grinning:

  • Or, use extra GO pieces to build the rest of the castle walls, towers and battlements. Then have your students imagine the details of the kingdom/queendom they have created and write the adventures and stories of the people who live there.

This would be a really fun summer camp activity, don’t you think?

@Audra_Selkowitz I love this new activity. I will definitely be writing this into next year’s scope. @Aimee_DeFoe I alsos love your extension of this with more castle related builds. I usually do a STEAM activity around Valentines Day where kids make catapults out of spoons, popsicle sticks, etc. to launch Valentine heart candy…now we can do this with vex pieces!
