Taking Apart the VEX Field Tiles

Hi, everyone!

I’m having a problem with taking apart the field tiles without causing too much wear and tear on the linking connector pieces. I run an after school program for VEX123, Go, and IQ. We have had quite a few tiles break over the past few years and students are eager to help and the often do a pull-push technique to take them apart.

I’d love to get some insight and advice on the best way to take them apart. Both my students and I struggle with removing tiles from large fields like the one used for competitions.

Cheers,

Jesse

Hi @Jesse_Robinson ! Here are some things I have noticed that can help keep Tiles from breaking. First of all, when you are taking them apart, it helps to hold one Tile down close to the edge where the connector pieces are, and gently pull the other one up (not away or out, if that makes sense). The closer you can grip the Tiles to the connector pieces the better! I’ve noticed when kids (or anyone else) holds up connected Tiles and sort of twists them to get them apart, that’s when they are most likely to break. It’s important to go slowly and be gentle, too, which isn’t always easy if you are in a hurry to clean up, so be sure to allow plenty of clean up time.

I’d have a practice session with my students at the beginning of the year - dedicating a bit of time to how to safely take the Tiles apart and put them away - before actually diving into any VEX lessons. Putting that time in on the front end of the year will save time and money in the long run!

Hope that’s helpful - let me know!

Hi Aimee,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I will give this a try with my students and pass on this information to the other VEX educators at my school.

Have a wonderful day,

Warmest Regards,

Jesse
