V5 Controller

I have a V5 controller that has a blinking red screen. When connecting the Controller to a PC or to a power outlet using a USB-micro USB cable, the Controller seems to boot correctly, but then its screen begins flashing red at regular 3-to-4-second intervals. After a minute or so, the Controller suddenly turns off, and pressing the power button does not turn it back on - only unplugging and re-plugging the cable connection turns the Controller back on.

Also, the V5 Controller’s battery level varies randomly between 0% and around 50% each time it is powered on. Leaving the Controller charging via PC connection or power outlet does not fix this.

I have already reset the controller using the button the back.

Is there anything I can try or this just a bad controller?

@Jacob_Palnick Do you have any ideas what might be going on with this controller?

This is the first time I’ve seen an issue like this. I checked with the engineers responsible for the controller and the short answer is that they suspect that the battery is dead. This is not a user replaceable part, so there is nothing you can do to fix that controller.

The long/detailed answer is that voltage of one of the cells in the battery has dropped too low. When a lithium battery cell’s voltage gets too low, it is no longer possible to charge the battery cell. This means that the battery will not be able to provide enough voltage to actually power the controller. This is not a common issue, but does happen occasionally. The controller’s battery charger does try to keep the battery cells within the correct voltage range, but it is still possible for a cell to over discharge causing this to happen.

This is a description of the absolute worst case for batteries in general, but it is important to prevent the battery from over discharge. Even with protections in place to disconnect the battery when the voltage gets too low, batteries still have a level of self discharge. This means that even when the battery is not connected to anything, it will still discharge slowly over time. If the battery is already low, and it sits for a while it can discharge past the safe level for the battery. This does not mean that the battery becomes unsafe, it just means that at that point, the battery starts to get damaged. This damage can reduce the charge capacity of the battery and cause future charge/discharge cycles to degrade the battery even faster than before.
