Workcell Smoking!

Hi All,
We have had 4/6 Workcells start to smoke while students are trouble shooting joints, anyone have that happen? Obviously we stop the run when this happens but we still have to test it…

Hi @Marissa_Brown! I’m sorry to hear this. Can you send me pictures of the Workcells? I’m wondering if the gears or another part of the build is causing resistance with the motors.

Can you also describe for me exactly how this happened? When you say troubleshooting joints, what exactly does that process look like?

Hi @Lauren_Harter ,
We have had two of the bots smoke coming from joint 1. As students are completing the testing to get the joints to pass this has happened in 2/6 groups, trying to avoid it in the rest. We can video Monday, we obviously stop everything as soon as it happens. In terms of troubleshooting (mastering) we are trying to get all the joints to pass and it is occurring while students are following the directions given here: Joint 1- https://kb.vex.com/hc/en-us/articles/360057337492-Fixing-Joints-to-Master-the-V5-Workcell#fixing-joint-1-3LGmZ

I assumed it was fluke until it happened in the same spot in two of the robots. Wondering if something is off with the build instructions because we sat down and went through everything up to that step and we cannot find an error. A build video like there is for VEX EXP in addition with the pdfs would be a game changer for my students when it comes to the Workcell.

Hi @Marissa_Brown! Noting that it is coming from joint 1 is helpful. I have seen some resistance before with joint 1 because of the turntable. When the Workcell is powered off, if you hand-turn the Workcell about joint 1, can you feel resistance?

I would suggest lubricating the turntable to see if this helps alleviate the issue. You can find information on how to do this here.
